Location information for Fira

Car rental Fira
Introduction
Fira (also called Thera or Thira) is the capital of the Greek island Santorini. The city itself is not very attractive, but it's a good basis to discover the rest of Santorini.
Population
The town has over 2,000 inhabitants.
Location
The white houses with bright blue roofs of Fira are spectacularly located on top of a 250 meter high steep rocky coast, in fact the edge of a crater. Santorini lies in the Aegean Sea, 110 kilometers north of Crete.
Economy
Tourism is the main source of income for Santorini. The island also produces wine and, on a small scale, vegetables (cherry tomatoes, eggplant and katsouni, a type of cucumber).
Airports
Santorini National Airport is situated six kilometers southwest of Fira, just north of the village Kamari. The airport is easily reachable by rental car: the route to the airport is clearly signposted.
Public Transport
There is a bus station in Fira, but there's no city bus transportation. Busses only run to other destinations on Santorini. There are smaller busses that don't stop at a bus stop but you can flag them by raising your hand. Ferries navigate between the most important coastal towns.
Traffic and Parking
A rental car is ideal to discover Santorini. Keep in mind that the roads on the edge of the crater slope steeply and can be winding. As elsewhere in Greece you can stumble across flocks of sheep or goats. You also need to beware of cars parked at unexpected locations. In Fira [note translator: is Santorini correct or should this be Fira?] it's not difficult to find a parking space for your rental car. There's a large parking lot near the bus station.
Hotels
As small as the main island Thira is, there is a difference between the west side (the edge of the crater, with the capital Fira) and the east side (the lower part). Hotel prices on the west side are higher than in the east. You pay for the spectacular view! If you want to visit Santorini in the summer months we recommend booking your hotel room well in advance.
