Location information for Chios
Introduction
Chios is the fourth largest island of Greece. Its inhabitants have built a reputation in the merchant navy. Furthermore the island is known for its mastic trees which produce an aromatic resin. In Chios there are mediaeval towns, such as Nea Moni which can be found on the UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Population
Chios has about 55,000 inhabitants on a surface of more than 900 square kilometers. Most of them live in the capital which is called Chios as well and which is the most important harbor of the island.
Location
Chios is situated in the Aegean Sea, in front of the coast of Turkey (at a distance of only five kilometers). The capital of the island is Chios and lies on the east-coast.
Economy
Merchant navy forms an important part of the local economy. The ships transport the products of the island: resin of the mastic trees (used in ouzo and chewing gum), but also olives, figs, cherries, mandarins and wine.
Airports
The airport of Chios lies approximately four kilometers south of the capital. There is no bus connection from the airport to the city. Yet there are taxis, but of course you can also rent a car. It is the ideal way to explore the rest of the island!
Public transport
There are two bus connections on the island: the city transport in the capital is done by blue buses, the green buses connect with other towns on the island. The taxis on Chios all have a meter, but make sure the driver actually starts it. For some popular destinations there are fixed rates.
Furthermore there are boat connections with Cesme in Turkey, with the Greek island Lesbos and with Piraeus (the harbor of Athens).
Traffic and parking
Chios is a large island and to be able to get to know it a rental car is strongly recommended. However, do take into account that the roads outside of the city are usually unpaved. In the hilly inland the roads are narrow and curvy. Make sure you drive slowly and bear flying stones in mind on unpaved roads.
Hotels
Chios is not as touristic as many other Greek islands, but there is a good offer of hotels and guesthouses. Even in the smaller towns you can easily find an accommodation, although probably the accommodation will be rather basic most of the times.
