Introduction

Aix-en-Provence is an atmospheric city with many historic buildings and interesting museums. In the Historical Museum you learn more about the origin and the growth of the city, and the Carpet Museum (Le Musée de Tapisseries) has an extensive and beautiful collection of tapestries. Furthermore, Aix is the birthplace of painter Paul Cézanne. His studio is now a museum. Walking through Aix-en-Provence you can see why it's also called the city of thousand fountains. The most beautiful is La fontaine d’eau chaude (built in 1734 and fed by a warm spring) and La fontaine du Roi René (dedicated to king René who introduced the muscadine into the region).

Population

The city has almost 150,000 inhabitants.
