Introduction
Aix-en-Provence is an atmospheric city with many historic buildings and interesting museums. In the Historical Museum you learn more about the origin and the growth of the city, and the Carpet Museum (Le Musée de Tapisseries) has an extensive and beautiful collection of tapestries. Furthermore, Aix is the birthplace of painter Paul Cézanne. His studio is now a museum. Walking through Aix-en-Provence you can see why it's also called the city of thousand fountains. The most beautiful is La fontaine d’eau chaude (built in 1734 and fed by a warm spring) and La fontaine du Roi René (dedicated to king René who introduced the muscadine into the region).

Location
Aix-en-Provence is situated in the south of France, 30 kilometers north of Marseille. To the east of the city lies a ridge, Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which is depicted in many of Paul Cézanne's paintings.
Economy
Tourism is of great importance for Aix-en-Provence. The city itself and also the vineyards around Aix draw many visitors per year. Except for wine the region produces olive oil and chocolate. South of the city high-tech companies are located. Furthermore, Aix is famous for the sweets made there, which are known as callisons.
Airports
The international airport of Aix-en-Provence lies 25 kilometers southwest of the city. With a rental car it will take you roughly 20 minutes to get from the airport to Aix, via the D9.
Public transportation
Aix-en-Provence has good public bus services. Buses run frequently, also to places near the city and to the TGV station, which is situated between Aix and Marseille.
Traffic and parking
The old center of Aix-en-Province is largely a pedestrian zone. You can easily park your rental car in one of the underground or above ground parking garages and further explore the city on foot. Furthermore, Aix is surrounded by highways, so you can comfortably visit attractions in the area with a car. For example, visit the old towns Cadanet and Lourmarin, or drive next to the Côte d’Azur.
